About where should a young, single professional live in Dallas. I work at the UT Southwestern medical campus

Where should a young, single professional live in Dallas. I work at the UT Southwestern medical campus.?
I am moving down from St Louis and I really hope the social scene in Dallas is better. I heard that Uptown is a great place to live but the traffic sucks. ANd also I guess it's really expensive. How much do you guys think that a 2 bedroom condo in that area cost? Thanks a ton in advance for your help.

on the lawn.
2 :
my mother is a Realtor and she just said that she could most likely get in that area for under $100,000 send me an email and i can get you hooked up with her.
3 :
My advice is don't live in downtown. Downtown living sucks. And for a huge social scene, go to Deep Elum. Another social place is Mockingbird Station. But for a young single guy like you, I suggest moving to Plano or Irving. Traffic isn't that bad, but that's only because I've lived in the Dallas area my entire life, so I'm used to it.
4 :
You should live in Allen or McKinney. They are located in the fastest growing county in Texas and they have great stores and people are very nice!!! They are both suburbs of Dallas.Great food too!!!
5 :
Take a look at Addison Circle area. Great place, lots of restaurants and young people. Traffic from there to Southwestern isn't bad if you aren't going right at downtown rush hour .. about a 30 minute drive. Uptown is also very good. There are some new lofts in the Medical complex area - cheaper than downtown. Also look off of Lovers Lane West of the Dallas North Tollway - great location, some cool new apartments, and just a few miles from the SW complex. Also they are building and rehabbing a lot now around the Lemmon avenue area.
6 :
I second the notion of Addison. It's definitely turned into the place where everyone goes. People in Dallas, Denton, Arlington, basically all over the Metroplex go to Addison.
7 :
There is a new Cityville complex that is going in at the Southwestern Medical Complex that just recently opened within blocks of SMC. Ohterwise, I would recommend areas east of there. Oak Lawn would be close and little traffic. Downtown is booming and very cool, but pricey. Avoid the suburbs, you'll have major traffic. Look around in the Inwood / Lemmon area. You could get a nice condo for around $1,100./mo and be within a 15 minute drive (no freeways) to work. Good luck and enjoy Dallas.
8 :
Since you are going to be working at UT Southwestern I would suggest Knox Henderson, Lower Greenville, Inwood/Lemmon or Oak Lawn. Addison is cool, but commuting from there is a pain during rush hour, believe me, I've done it. Living in the suburbs of Irving, Mckinney and Plano will be too much of a commute and it's filled with families and not much night life unless you want to be home by 10pm. A 2 bedroom condo will run you about $1200 a month.
9 :
Based on your location, either of the following neighborhoods would fit you good. Depends on your budget, if you're buying or renting will determine where you live. Oak Lawn Area, Uptown, Downtown, Knox/Henderson, Lower Greenville, Mockingbird Area, Park Cities. I live in Downtown and although it's beginning to boom, right now would be the time to buy. The nighlife is great, especially in the Main Street District and then you're in the vicinity of Victory park, West End, Arts Disctrict and Deep Ellum, not to mention that you're centrally located. Of course, all this is urban living, if you're the suburb type of guy, then no point looking here. But I'll tell you this much, that drive to Plano or Frisco gets old real quick... it's worth it, check out downtown for sure, even if it's for temporary living which you can later sell and make a good profit on the investment. Rent-wise you're looking at $1100 - $1500, buyingwise you're looking at $180K - $220K... my propoerty already got an 18% equity within 14 months... top that in Dallas! Good luck with your findings.
10 :
I moved here from Kansas City in 2000... uptown is good...Knox/Henderson is good...West Village is good... 2 bedroom condo will run you 300K and up in those areas...for a new one...you can find a fixer upper for much less...or if you are willing to move to up and coming neighborhoods, on the gamble that they will be revitalized, you can save considerably. I live in Addison which is just north of 635 and Midway...I love it...zero lot line homes with a homes association that mows the front lawns...we have a four mile jogging trail...a duck pond...an athletic center with indoor/outdoor pools, racquetball courts, tennis courts and full service gym..the athletic center is free to those who live in the neighborhood...homes cost from 280K for a 2000 square foot one...and go up to several million...there are also some townhomes and condos in Addison that are considerably less....Addison is only 10-15 minutes from downtown, 10-15 minutes from the airport, 20 minutes from White Rock Lake, etc...it seems central to everything. There is a lot to do every weekend...there are always festivals, events...art showings, plays to attend, etc...there are a lot of bars and nightspots.. Also, there are many people here who are transplants from other cities...so everyone seems really nice....it is easy to make a ton of friends in a short amount of time. The city itself is ugly...flat and concrete...not many neighborhoods of any architectural significance...but, it is still a cool place to live. Just read some other posts...for a young single guy...do not move to Allen, McKinney or Irving...unless you are a redneck and want to carry a shotgun in your back window...while those places are o.k. for families...that need good public schools...they are a long ways away from your job, and any real social scene.

What are the best colleges for B.A. in Social Work in the Dallas Metroplex area?
I have decided to pursue my B.A. in Social Work and I am getting lost researching colleges and universities in the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex area. Any help would be appreciated.

You don't actually want a B.A. in Social work, you will want a BSW (Bachelor of Social Work). If you do not have your BSW, regardless of your degree, you cannot be called a social worker in many states. Not all colleges offer a BSW, even though they may offer an Undergraduate degree in Social Work, Human Services, Behavioral/Social Sciences, so on and so forth. The only way you can tell if they offer BSW and MSW degrees is if you go to the Council of Social Work Education website and search your state. I have linked the search area for you and you can just input Texas as the state and it will tell you ever school that is accredited or going through accreditation at this time, here is the site-- http://portal.cswe.org/Membership/MemberDirectorySearch.aspx

I moved to Dallas for work in March, but I hate living here! What can I do to make the best of it for 1 yr?
I visited a few times before moving for a couple weeks at a time. I really don't fit in here though, the culture shock blows me away and the lack of diversity is such a change from Los Angeles. I have to stay at least until my apartment lease is up next April, unfortunately.

I moved from Southern California a little over a year ago, and LOVE it in Dallas! ... How can you miss all the crime, the graffiti covering everything, and homeless people at every freeway on-ramp? ... The people in Dallas are friendly, down-to-earth people and don't try to impress everyone they see... The stores don't have "no credito" written all over the windows, and the store signs are actually in English here! ... There's plenty to do here, and you might try taking long-weekend trips to see Houston and Austin (you might like Austin best) ... Look for the good in Dallas and stop comparing it to LA (but Dallas wins, hands down!)
2 :
Become a hardcord Dallas Cowboy fan!
3 :
I understand exactly what you mean. I moved to North Texas from Alaska 26 years ago. * I married a Texan *. I had to learned to accept that this is home. So, I travel out of town frequently, to go camping ,hiking, and fishing. I've been to Kentucky, Utah, Missouri, Oklahoma, and and various other locations to visit family. So I would recommend, find some places that you might enjoy traveling to, and go have a good time. (You might even find a new place that you would like to call home.)
4 :
try joining some clubs like local for hiking or biking try the dallas arts museum and sticking around the downtown area for activities go to kalajandras for diverse food on gurly avenue i lived in lakewood and it was very liberal and diverse for me compared to illinois where i now live
5 :
I'm so sorry that you're unhappy here. What would you like to be able to do that you can't do here? Maybe it's the area you live in. Have you made friends at work? Do you socialize with them on your time off? Have you joined a church? There are so many great places to eat just about any type food you'd like. There are several different major league sports. Lakes galore if you like water sports, hiking, biking. Several very nice museums. Clubs. Six Flags. Shopping. I guess it's a good thing every city is different so there's a place to make everyone happy.
6 :
Im sorry ur unhappy here...u can hang out with me you can email me superman_1216@yahoo.com or IM well or also in oklahoma theres this place called turner falls, you can camp out there for a weekend its nice and it huge its very mountanous also in arlington theres Six Flags over tExas and Also Hurricane Harbor... IN Grand Praire there is a wax museum and ripley beleive it or not museum its cool u could travel down to San Antonio and go to alamo, history um the river walk. Sea World is Also cool! Now in Dallas if you like going to bars/clubs theres alot on greenville ave... its like long st of nothing but that
7 :
I'm so sorry to hear that AJ. I'm originally from TX and my plans are to move back in September. I'm looking to move to the Dallas area, i currently live in LA (5years) but want to be closer to my family. Shoot me an email and we can chat about the pros and cons.. i'm interested in hearing more about your experiences out there seeing that you're from LA too..i'm not totally convinced that i'm making the right move myself... i hope it gets better for ya soon. zkfc488@wellpoint.com
8 :
I am sorry, AJ. Maybe you just have to look in the right places. I moved from Dallas to L.A. and I can tell you that to me there was a much "easier" diversity in Dallas from my point of view. I grew up with Chicano, African-American, Vienamese culture, etc... You might like a little artsier crowd like I did. There is a huge underbelly of "artsy" in Dallas to counter-balance the conservative side of the city that might seem opressive to you. To defend my home town, people are much friendlier there than in L.A. The only strangers who will talk to you here are the homeless-if you say Hi to someone as you walk past in L.A. they look at you like you are crazy. There is ALWAYS PLENTY OF PARKING!! Tex Mex cuisine is MUCH better in Big D, tho I do like the salsa at Lucy's on Pico & La Brea. There are plenty af arthouse movie theaters in Big D, so you can see most of the off-beat, indie, foreign or doc films that you can see in L.A. Have you been to the Angelika Movie Theater yet? Or the Magnolia? You can go on a quick car trip there, out and back in 15 minutes to just about anywhere. (Try that in gridlock L.A.)There is a pretty good Metaphysical/Spiritual crowd there. Try hooking up with the cool people thru publications or classes at the Wholefoods on Lower Greenville. There are tons of great clubs, (that's about all there is to do there-eat out and go clubbing). You'd better check out the authentic Texas Blues scene there, if you don't, you will be missing out. (Try The Hole in the Wall around Harry Hines. They are very laid back and friendly). Also, lots of homegrown great bands and musicians. Just like everyone in L.A. is an actor, everyone in Texas is a musician. Have you tried Meetups.com for meeting people with similar interests? I've gone to a few in L.A. and I know they have them in Dallas. O.K. now please go to The Great Outdoors sub shop on Lemmon & Douglas and eat an avacado sub with chips and lemonade and cherry peppers for me. Oh, and get some pizza at Campisi's on Mockingbird-it's famous all over the world. Oh, and if you need some outside-a hiking scenario like Runyan Canyon or Ferndell, just put on your walking shoes and drive over to White Rock Lake on a Saturday or Sunday. Lot's of friendly people walking their dogs around the lake and cooking out. Get involved with A.C.T. the local animal rights group. They will welcome you with open arms. Pick up a Dallas Observer, and if you can get past all the breast implant ads, (just like the L.A. Weekly!), you'll find a whole cultural, intellectual side of Dallas that is invisible when just looking at the shiny glass buildings. Good luck, dear! P.S. Turn off your computer right now and drive over to Keller's Drive-In restaurant on Northwest Hwy. Best burgers in the world served right in your car (I'm a veg so I got mine without the meat) and rootbeers in frosty mugs! I confess, I was appalled when I came here and sampled In and Out Burgers and Carl Jr.s No comparison to Keller's.
9 :
Check out Fort Worth. You probably need to live in Houston if you like diversity !
10 :
Well my dear, since you can't change the town, you will just have to change your attitude. Find something you like to do and do it. Get involved with a church group. Learn to jet ski or ride a horse. Find a mall or a Barnes and Noble - they all look the same. Get up each day and remind yourself of Psalm 118:24

WHo cares the Mavs are choke artists! And with Erika Dampier at center they will never be anything!
2 :
Doesn't hurt. I think it'll take Dallas some time to fit Marion into their roster (maybe more time than it should). If he doesn't work out, there are a lot of teams who will gladly trade for him.
3 :
maybe he could be the like Lamar Odom of the Lakers. He can be the 3-4 coming off the bench.
4 :
yeah because carlislie wants to speed it up and fit marion's style
5 :
I think it could work with marion and dallas
6 :
I think it will work, as he doesn't have to be the superstar (Dirk), and he has a PG (Kidd) that runs the fast break really well like Nash did when he was really good in Phoenix. He will make a good number 4 option, after Dirk, Jason Terry, and Josh Howard.
7 :
It depends on Marion's frame of mind.
8 :
Both Marion and Howard are versatile. Howard can play the 2 and 3. And Marion can play 2, 3, and 4. I think the Mavs office want Howard to play SG and Marion to play as SF. Terry will still be coming off the bench... so Terry would be their 6th man again. Kidd will be the starting PG, and Dirk and Dampier will play the 4 and 5, respectively.
9 :
He won't do sh!t. Trust me we had here in Miami. He was bull sh!t. And a waste of money.
10 :
Mavs is gonna beast next season
11 :
The Matrix will be the same versatile player we have seen in the past. It sounds Marion and Howard are overlapped, but they will play at the same time because they have different roles. Expect Marion to anchor the defense and again, J-Kidd will feed enough balls to Marion to take his awkward shooting. In a tactical perspective, I think benching Howard and starting Terry at SG make sense. Marion will get the respect he believes he deserves and this motor will run asap, easily sharing some loads from Dirk while maintaining a tight defensive line. On the other hand, Howard will be the focal point in second unit and by adding supporting players like Barea, Thomas and Ross, Mavs possess the luxuxry for resting Dirk for some extra minutes, which is exceptionally crucial for keeping him refreshing for playoff. In short, what Mavs treasure on Marion is his versatility, and they simply maximize it.

Not really. The relative humidity needs to be down in the 10 to 20 percent range for an evaporative cooler to be effective. They work great in places like Midland and Odessa but not DFW area. If you want some facts on their performance look here: http://www.consumerenergycenter.org/home/heating_cooling/evaporative.html

Lots of people had them when I lived in Dallas. I had one in my two car garage that I converted into a shop.I still remember How cool it got when I was working out there. The cost was way cheaper than a/c and with the doors closed it kept me from sweating.

I don't live in TX, but I doubt there is anywhere you can get free dental. However you can get low-cost dental care at dentistry schools. Call around. Hope this helps and good luck! I found this article: http://www.tambcd.edu/dentalhealthcheck/articles/Articles/040412_JoblessPatients.html
2 :
If he is on public assistance, he can get free dental care.
3 :
if you can't get free resources, go to a local dental school, they do work for much cheaper. and it's not as scary as it sounds, it will be a dentist with a student learning...not just a student hacking away all by himself.
4 :
The Baylor College of Dentistry 3302 Gaston Ave Dallas, TX 75246 (214) 828-8100 Call and ask what the procedure is to get an appointment. I do not know if they take patients who cannot pay. The cost may be cheaper because it is a university.
5 :
Try a Dental college, or you can do a google search and see what you will find.
6 :
Contact your local or state dental association and and see if there are any dentists who provide free or reduced cost care for low-income, disabled or senior patients. Call your local health department and ask about health centers that provide dental care for free or on a sliding scale. Your local United Way may also be aware of such a clinic. In some areas, you can reach them now by dialing 2-1-1 for "non-emergency information." Go to a dental school, if there is one near you, for reduced costs. Check http://www.toothwoman.net to see if low-cost or free dental services are available near you. Check http://bphc.hrsa.gov and choose "Find a Health Center" to see if there is a low-cost clinic near you. Check http://www.nfdh.org/DDS.html to see if your state has a "Donated Dental Services" program. D.D.S. is designed to locate dentists who will give free care to patients who are financially compromised due to medical problems. This is a process that will take a couple of months to get your information and then arrange for someone to see you. Not all states have D.D.S. programs.

The minimum age is 14 years, but it depends on the type of job you'll be doing as well. You can "deliver" newspapers at 11 years of age, but to do "direct sales" of the newspapers you must be 16 years of age. There are also laws that limit the number of hours a child may work and the which hours of the day they may work. The link below has more information from the Texas Workforce Commission. http://www.twc.state.tx.us/ui/lablaw/cllsum.html

Legally? You're not old enough to have a job unless it's babysitting, helping with a family business or a work program through your school (like summer youth programs). Sorry.

About are the protesters going to make it hard for me to get to work in Dallas tomorrow

Are the protesters going to make it hard for me to get to work in Dallas tomorrow?
Seriously, should I leave earlier? I know the pro-illegals protesters are supposed to doing a huge thing. Will it clog traffic? Should I plan for a longer commute? This question has nothing to do with the debate on illegals. Any answers which do not offer any advice about my commute and are merely inflammatory, will be reported as abuse. I work near White Rock Lake
